B is for Breakfast

My first real memory of Uganda is breakfasting at the ARA in Kampala. I had a nice chat with Martha while eating toast with butter and jam, tea with milk and sugar, and some odd-tasting cantalope. The cantalope tasted funny for good reason...it was actually papaya. Some color, totally different texture and taste. I enjoyed it the next time, once I learned it wasn't supposed to be a melon!

We never ate butter and jelly together on toast in my family, so it wasn't until that day that I discovered how wonderful they are together. Have a glass of passionfruit juice with that, and it's pretty much the perfect way to start off the day.

I didn't know it at the time, but I was destined to drink a lot of tea with milk and sugar. Once you start, it's kind of addicting. Who wants that black stuff when it can be sweet and creamy? I go through phases still of "needing" something else to go with my tea.
