Washing Clothes, Karamojong Style
Washing clothes by hand is a skill most Karamojong women seem to have. It's one I'd like to have, but washing clothes in a plastic basin isn't as easy as it might look. You have to scrub hard to get the dirt out, and I'm a lazy American. I did try washing my own clothes a few times last year, letting them soak while I went off to teach Mary and Kipsy. But Joyce inevitably got to them before me, scrubbing and rinsing and hanging them on the line by the time I got back. She had no trust in my laundry abilities (with good reason), but I think she also did it out of kindness, and not (just?) because of mzungu status reasons, either...
Thanks, Joyce. :)
PS - The girl in the photo is one Amy hired to do her laundry; she's not Joyce.
