Ugandan Flag

For the last year or so, I've been thinking the Ugandan flag has a rooster on it.

Then last Saturday night, as I was talking about Uganda to some kids at Rocky's missions conference, one of them commented on the "chicken" on the flag. Suddenly it clicked, and I remembered that Uganda's national bird is a crested crane. Much more noble of a bird to be on a flag!

  • Amanda, did you ever hear why, or when, Uganda put the crested crane on its flag? Was there a Betsy Ross of Uganda? Does this have some special meaning? Crested crane seems quite exotic to me. How would one do research on this topic? Does Uganda have libraries, archives, and books that document its history? Is the information available on-line? Do many countries put birds on their flags -- or is Uganda's unique among the flags of the nations?

  • Hmm, I have no idea. It would be an interesting topic to research, though.
